The gentle treatment of nature is very important to Martin and he converted the winery, which he took over from his parents in 2014, to organic farming. In the region around Heldenberg he cultivates 25 hectares of vineyard following biodynamic principles in order to respect the different weather conditions and encourage the best out of the respective vintages. In Martin’s own words “active soil life leads to a higher resistance of the vine to parasites and pathogens; it enables an intensive exchange with millions upon millions of microorganisms and better resistance to negative environmental influences. The vines are allowed to grow old and so their roots go deeper and thus interact with a more vital soil fauna. A living soil is also better protected against erosion and its nutrient system is more diverse”. The decision to work biodynamically (in practice since 2012 and in official conversion since 2018) was a logical consequence for Martin.
Martin’s aim is to produce naturally ripe fruit, rich in aromas and texture from the seeds, skins and tannins. With temperatures getting warmer every year, producing wines that are balanced without high alcohol levels is no mean feat but Martin’s wines are full of taste; the alcohol in total harmony with the fruit and acidity.
